You are right theorectically but I've shot a lot in professional soccer games with A77 (and Nikon D3s, so I know what quick  AF is) which is good. I do not use a timer but from my experience, A99 is no quicker to my detection and AF-D using 70-400 is a gimmick right now until I got my Minota 70-200/2.8 upgraded to AF-D. One final point however which is A99 seems to be more accurate -- very natural for bigger sensor size and therefore higher signal ratio.
