An amazing sequence. I've never seen anything like it. The proliferation of high quality gear combined with some very knowledgeable amateurs has made it possible to get pictures which only dedicated experts used to be capable of getting. Perhaps we're heading back to the days of the early 19th century when all serious biologists were amateurs. If so, that would be fine by me. No need for PhDs.

Although I am not technically an amateur, photography is neither my primary vocation nor my main source of my income and  I agree with you 100%.  Some of the most interesting photography I have seen comes from people who (like me) have great equipment and years of experience using it but do something else for a living.
