This is the perfect situation to experiment with Manual (M) mode.

Meter the shot in P using ISO 400 or 800. Switch to M mode. Take a shot - it should be the same settings as in the P mode.

Then just reduce the exposure by increasing the shutter speed in steps. Take a shot at each step because the final image won't match exactly what you're seeing in the viewfinder. Keep going until the entire image looks virtually dark.

I'd shoot all this in raw mode or in raw+jpeg mode. The difference will be apparent if you have DRO turned on while you're shooting. But reviewing all these photos will teach you a lot. And you'll have some good pictures.

I'd also try some of the auto modes as others have suggested.
