If you aren't carrying the camera in a camera bag that provides protection, you can take the lens off the camera and wrap both in a bit of bubble wrap for a bit more protection. That way it can take a little banging without worrying about damaging the lens mount.
I usually just carry my camera in a camera bag as my second carry on (personal item) bag.
