baseball and mountains

Looking at getting a NEX-7 for two primary uses and have one major question.
1. HS baseball. Hoping to shoot pictures of a pitcher from about 120 feet away. I've seen others comment that a 300-400 mm lens is required. Perhaps if you can't get that close or you are trying to capture an center fielder.
2. In the mountains. Looking for a camera to shoot the mountain scenery. Will not be climbing on the mountains.
3. Is it too much camera? I interpreted the DPREVIEW review to indicate that the default settings were not good and that unless you were prepared to tweak your pictures with the trinav interface, most of this camera would be lost on you. Put differently, is PASM sufficient for your average baseball game?
