D800 and commander flash mode

I read of another person with a distantly similar problem on Nikonians: Nikonians Link

(I think you have to be a subscriber to get to it, but the end result was a trip to Nikon and as of the last posting he had not gotten it back yet).

That it doesn't fire at all seems completely wrong.  So you've looked directly at it, and no pre-flashes or any light comes out?

I can't even think of a setting that causes that.  There are ways to program buttons to turn the flash off, but they turn off in commander or TTL both, so that seems unlikely (plus you would have to be holding them).  It might be worth a two-button reset just to see (you will lose all your other settings and have to reset).

If you aren't at the latest firmware it might be worth doing so, not that there was anything related in the fix list, but it does reinitialize some of the camera's programming when it gets loaded.

But it just plain sounds broken, but in a weird, non-mechanical way.
