I use the J1 and I have friends who use the OMD for their kids.

In short, OMD is far superior than the J1, especially for high ISO, indoor situations. But as other users here have said, the J1 ain't too shabby, just not as good as the OMD.

Having said that, the amount I've spent on my J1, an FT1 adapter, a 35mm and a 50mm f/1.8G (it came with the 10-30mm and 30-110mm kit lens) is about the same as it would've cost me to just get the OMD with the standard kit lens!

My friends who bought the OMD ultimately end up buying the superb, but expensive 12mm f/2 lens and other expensive lenses - but the OMD encourages you to do that, simply because it is a very good camera which begs to be used.

So, in a nutshell, if money is not an issue for you, go for the OMD. If money is a bit tight, but you still want to catch the smile of your kids, a J1/V1/J2/V2 ain't too bad either.
