Syncing a D7000 with an old Minolta 4000af flash and cheap optical trigger

Hi,

I have a D90 and I think your system is similar.  The camera flash setting has to be set to manual to stop the preflash in TTL.  The optical trigger should then synch at the same time as your older flash.  Sounds like the optical trigger is getting its signal from the preflash and setting the Minotla unit off too early.
