D7000 w/wireless remote does not focus prior to release

I have found a couple threads that address this, although none seemed to have a resolution. I am wondering if anyone has gotten a prefocus when using the wireless remote? I have tried all the settings that I can think of that might affect the function, but to no avail. Focus dot off, ae button set to af/on or not on. AF/S AF/C etc. Quick release vs delayed release.
I would suspect that it should function the same as using the shutter button, half press for focus and then full press for shutter release.
This page http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11940/~/using-the-ml-l3-remote-control seems to indicate that AF/S with delayed remote should focus and then fire within 2 seconds. That is not happening. It does all but focus. It also says that it should not fire if focus is not achieved.
Anyone get this to function that cares to share the settings.
Thank you.
