I think Tamron a couple or so years ago built their alpha mount 17-50 f2.8 for Sony DSLR. If you can do it for that, then you can do it for the NEX series. The real questions are:
1- Will the Sony lens be a Tamron design or will it be their own? If it is a G, then it's likely a Sony lens.
2- Will Sony "allow" Tamron to release the 17-50 f2.8 soon? If the G lens version will be out, I think, Tamron will have to wait 4-6 months to release theirs.
Sony has an 11% stake with Tamron to my recall, and that surely has some influence on release dates. No doubt in my mind that they will have a Tamron 17-50 f2.8. It's not any different that there is an 18-200 tamron in spite of having 3 releases of sony's own 18-200. There is always a place for small form factor and lower price.
