Help needed: Investing in Single vs Dual flash setup for macro
Oct 31, 2012

Photography is expensive hobby and gets worse if one has to reinvest in the equipment (personal experience). I saw many beautiful pictures taken with single flash unit + diffuser and I decided to get a Wimberly flash bracket and use my Nikon SB600 flash unit with soft box. However I am now confused after reading various posts here indicating dual flash set up is better. Is that true? What is the difference between single vs dual flash system for macro photography? Are there situations where one is better than other? If I need to purchase a second Wemberly bracket and a second flash unit, it'll add up almost same as Nikon R1C1 twin flash, which probably is lighter (?) and easier to control (?). I know there are cheaper DIY solutions: http://www.buckcash.com/MFB.htm

My interest is shooting mostly flowers, bugs & bees and experiment with some > 1:1 magnification images. My camera set up is Nikon D700 + Sigma 150 lens.

I'll appreciate if you all can give your valuable opinions. I asked same question in macro forum but didn't get many responses.
