At full rez (uncompressed), a 1 gb card would hold roughly 12.5 (ergo 12) images... with lossless compression around 22 though it would never say more than 12 left as the camera calculates as though all remaining pics would be uncompressed. If you're shooting only RAW and seeing a number larger than 12 OR getting more than 22 pictures on a 1gb card, there's something you're not telling us.

You appear to be correct. I have the 1GB Compact Flash card in slot #1 and a 8GB SD card in slot #2 for overage.

I think that answers my question as to why the counter is starting on 12, then the SD card kicks in.
