When I choose a different shooting mode with the PASM wheel on my NEX6, I always get the same selection on the LCD, requiring me to halfpress the shutter to make this go away. Is there a way to disable this, and just let the PASM wheel change the mode while keeping the camera in 'shooting' mode.

Try switching the "Menu Start" in the main settings from "Top" to "Previous"; and see if it does what you want.

Menu start serves a different purpose And when menu option is activated. It determines where the menu screen will be the next time you press menu.
