I just bought the 50 1.8, and it's been an experience.
I find that overall it's improved my skills, as the fixed focal length eliminates the crutch of, "zoom in-out until the photo looks decent, and then snap." I now have to take a more active role in making an photo interesting, with more emphasis on angle, composition, etc, rather than simple subject framing -- it's a very different shooting style.
I haven't yet felt any need for the extra stop of the 1.4, and the bokeh doesn't bother me. For what the lens costs, you can probably just pick up the 1.8, play with it a while, and make a decision later whether to keep/sell it.
