one way or the other

Will there be an E mount constant f/2.8 standard zoom, with image stabilization and roughly 16-50mm range? And if so, any thoughts on when?

Sony will make this lens one way or the other. The roadmap says a fast g lens standard zoom in 2013. This could be it.

But even if it isn't, this doesn't stop Tamron from making a 17-50 f2.8 OSS. Sony has a stake in Tamron and that lens will sell. Even if it's not a Sony badge lens, Tamron could release one and that would be good enough for me. The 17-50 f2.8 is very high regarded in Canon and Nikon mounts, so there is a design of that lens that need only the mount and electronics and protocol for the NEX. That shouldn't be a problem making one.

And for those who thing one will not be made because it is too large. Well, there is already the 16-50 compact zoom, so get those if size is a big thing for you. But there is a need for fast lenses at the expense of size. Wedding, PJ, street photography can use those. And if it is like the famous Tamron 17-50 f2.8 Di2, then it shouldn't be that big. People forget that the reason for interchangeable lens is not the size, but the ability to plug in the appropriate lens for the task at hand. We do lose the size advantage but we do gain the ability to complete such task, which is why you have interchangeble lenses in the first place.
