DX on a d600 is 10.5 MP; Fx is 24 MP. My D80 is 10.2 MP DX. This is about the same but the D600 has better DR and IQ, IMO.

Here's a 16-85 3.5/4.5 VR  DX lens, shot at 85mm (shot only to test mix shadow/light on the sensor) in DX mode (the 10.5 MP)

Here's another with same DX lens, in DX mode, at 85mm

Here's one (same lens) in DX at 16mm;

My conclusion is that you can use your nicer DX lenses in DX mode, and unless you print really large, you'll be happy with the outcome.

Here's an idea: use the DX mode on an FX lens, and get the "reach" to fill your frame with a bird or bear or whatever, and you can likely get a very nice image. I have tried this but am at work, and those images are on home computer.

I have also played with a DX 35mm 1.8 in FX mode, and noted at 2.8 thru 1.8 very little vignetting. At f16 and up to f22 you get the "shot through a porthole" look. This got me a low light wide to use in interior low light situations.
