I have shot with both the 300 f2.8 AFI and 80-200 f2.8 AFS. I typically use the 300 with TC17EII. Both have very fast AF, to me both have equal AF speed and accuracy. Image quality for the 300 w/ TC17 is extremely good. I have not had a chance to use the 300 f2.8 AFS  .

The only issue with 300 f2.8 AFI is avaliability of parts and weight.  AFI motor failing is a real issue and does happen (my lens had a AFI motor change several years back). I would expect 300 f2.8 AFI to be ~USD$1800.
