Of course, it's just a language abuse. The higher is the number, the lesser is the aperture.

It's just that these variable aperture kit lenses slide to the smaller apertures so fast. I used to have the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 on my D90 but now I'm trying the compact body solution, because I'm frustrated by not having my camera with me all the time due to the bulkiness of DLSR. Even putting a 50mm or 35mm prime doesn't help too much. I ordered the NEX 6 and I'll see if the compactness is goog enough reason to give up on a DSLR and their fast AF. I'm already looking at the next prime I'll buy for the NEX if I decide to keep it
