If there are more initial differences between X3F and Auto than brightness, it usually means that you have changed the image parameters in the camera, like contrast/sharpness/saturation. Note: For older models than Merrill, Auto will apply a whole range of changes, not just brightness.

I am getting some sense of wh'at you're saying though still a bit fuzzy in my head. If all Auto does is change the brightness, it doesn't seem very useful, isn't it ?
