I tried out my Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 1.4x with the 400L while I was out birding this weekend.
I still think you'd be better off with the 400L on the 7D - without a TC.
Love to see some comparisons of a detailed subject with the 7D/400L vs 5D3/400L/1.4xTC. I might do this myself once I'm back from this working trip I'm on.
I'd be surprised if there was any noticeable advantage in dropping the 2fps (and the $1K!) personally.
