Thanks.  I was able to get the solid gray desktop background by:

1. Right mouse click on the desktop and choose PERSONALIZE
2. From the third row click on "WINDOWS CLASSIC"
3. At the bottom of the same page click on " DESKTOP BACKGROUND 
SOLID COLOR"
4. Click on the color patch of your choice (I used a dark gray).
5. Click apply changes and then return to the desktop
