HSS permits the flash to pulse light in very short bursts whenever the shutter speed exceeds 1/200-250th of a second. This allows among other things fill light when you want to capture a continuously moving scene like moving water or children at play with the slight blur associated with movement. Further, with respect to distance, many images are possible at distances of 10-200 feet using a 200 mm or greater lens that require a flash positioned within its guide distance (usually close to the subject) to illuminate the scene. All this is not practical or possible without either a long flash cable or radio transceiver.
