This is a very good analogy and way to understand it.

Extending this idea further, noise level is the random differences in volume measured in each bucket. If the buckets where the size of thimbles, each would vary quite a bit by %, depending on the chance number of drops collected in each, and the accuracy in measuring the volume is lower (by weight).

Larger buckets have a larger sample size, and can be more accurately measured (by weight) so will vary much less in % terms, providing less noise in the data (and in the image).
