Could use some help with shooting a race car.
Oct 27, 2012

Hello All,

Thanks for reading. I'm trying to figure out how to setup my D300 with 18-35 lens to achieve the following shot properly. D300 was on a tripod, on lowest level, remotly triggered.

Excif and larger version here

Yeah this is unsharp, motion blur, I hoped with the 1/1000 to catch it but it's not fast enough. With very challenging light, sunny/cloudy/hailstorm, today wasn't the best day to test this. Aperture went down very fast too. I'm not sure what the speed of the car is there, it dosn't have a speedo as such.

What I'm looking for is a wide shot, hence the 18-35, 'frog eye' view, BIG frontwheel 'in your face'-look. The tripod/camera will be closer to the line the car drives i.e. the left, and few steps further back to get the orange pole more to the rightside  to crop out or even out of the view.

The batteries of my flash were flat (yeah I know...) so I couldn't test that route. It's the SB 900. I was thinking perhaps the high speed sync setting can help me, I read something about a kind of stroboscope effect that is used for that? Pre-focus perhaps, I think my 18-35 screwdrive isn't fast enough.

I just this year got into very occasionally shooting moving cars. Climbing the learning curve of panning shots bit by bit. This is a new challenge. The shots are used on the drivingschools website and social media outings so nothing high profile. I know panning lying flat on my belly on the track could give me the shot I want in the end, the demo-drivers can lay perfect lines around that corner time and time again, but still... that's a bit to scary for my taste right now.
