Golden hour - Best time to shoot in the mountains

I have a Garmin Dakota Hiking GPS that I use to location tag my photos in the Lightroom mapping feature. It also tells me when sunset and sunrise is based on my location.

The problem is that I have discovered that when I am in the mountains the low sun is blocked from illuminating my subject. By the time it does illuminate them it is higher in the sky.

What recommendations are there for shooting in the mountains?
