Isn't a Retina Hi-Res display bad for editing photos ?

I use a 24inch IPS 1920x1200 monitor for editing my photos. A big part of my editing is done at 100%, what I call edit at pixel level. Even with the low dpi monitor I use, sometimes I have to get very, very close to the monitor to be able to see what I am doing (Ex. Sharpening, masking, noise reduction, lens abberations)
With a high dpi monitor, how can I edit at pixel level ? For example, a 100% display of an image on my iPhone 4s does not allow me to see many flaws at pixel level, because I simply cannot see them.
