Thanks for all the advice, it didn't have thunderbolt, and no the dead drive no longer shows up in finder, so I don't know if that means it's disconnected or just dead!  It worked for a couple of days and like I said, then the lockup.  I think I'm just going to hook up the SSD and run from there for a while, my plan is to either pickup a new iMac after folks see how they work or go to a Mini Mac, I use mostly CS5 & LR4.  Would it be best to use my Snow Leopard disc and load it onto the new SSD (if I can) and then do a restore from time machine?  I really don't want to attempt to open the iMac up, just not into that any longer (I used to build PCs) and it seems quite intense to do the opening - maybe I'll give it a shot after I pickup my new iMac, otherwise I'll just try to sell it for cheap!
