Advice please - wait for the f4 70-200 VR, or spend almost as much on 80-200 AF-s 2.8?

Well I think you best bet is to wait 2-3 months unless you need it right now. By that time there will be a lot of reviews of the new lens and you have a better foundation for you decision. Remember if you choose between the AF-S and AF-D that the later only is supported on more expensive Nikon bodies if you want autofocus. My research tells me that the AF-S is a little bit better than the AF-D, but I don't think you will see it in real life. See my analysis here:  http://www.photospots.dk/p/nikon.html

Also check out this analysis that photography life have done on the new lens. Based on this it should be on heck of a lens, but only time will tell: http://photographylife.com/nikon-70-200mm-f4g-ed-vr-announcement
