The low-pass filter minimizes moire when you have something with a fine regular pattern (eg cloth).  For example the image below from Nikon (http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9544/~/what-is-moir%E3%A9%3F) shows moire.  This can be removed via software though.
