NO camera i ever bought in the last 40 years ,came with auto pilot,you are the commander in charge of the camera,  when metering , too much light will make the average parts darker,  and too much darkness will make the average parts too light, next time you look in the viewfinder or lcd ,think about what is the important part of the pic you about to take. with canon cameras i tend to err on the bright side[not much]  i find it easier to fix in photoshop when usiing levels  tool, than pulling details out of dark shadows. hope that helps you .
