I agree with CameraCarl and H2ODoctor's comments.  I own both; my original reason for adding the 70-300L was that it would replace the 70-200 f4/L for weight and travel, and add some reach.  For most non-photo-specific travel that's my long lens, but for photo related travel (e.g. going to Bosque in about 10 days), it's the 100-400 for sure.

Also, just a comment on a previous comment; although the 70-300 doesn't take Canon TC's, the Kenko PRO DGX 1.4 works quite well with it.
