sx50 low light video mode

I used my SX50 to shoot video at a Cub Scout gathering, that was lit mainly by firelight, and it seemed to do just fine.  Did you press the shutter button halfway so that the camera had a chance to evaluate the exposure and "gain up" the LCD?  I noticed that the screen can be very dark until you do that.
