How good is the EF 50 f1.8 II

Hi there

I'm wondering how good the EF 50 f1.8 II is and how it compares to altermative lenses. I'm looking for a low ligth alternative to my 24-105L on my 40D, and later perhaps on the 6D. The thing i like about the 50 1.8 II is the price and the weigth. I'll be using it for travel and street/indoor photography, not for portraits etc.
