Thanks for your response.  You gave a straight up answer, no demand. And you are probably right about that.  I'm not an optics expert, or even an amateur for that matter, but as an engineer I expect that if you gave up the design constraint that the 300 mm must also be a zoom, then it should be possible to improve the quality at the prime length to some degree.  I agree with you in regard to the quality of non-L lenses in the sub 50 mm range.  They are a very good value.  It would be nice have that kind of value option at 300 mm.
