We used to make a chain pod by taking a 1/4"x20 thumb screw, drilling a hole in the broad head, and attaching a piece of heavy weight beaded chain.  Depending on the length of the thumb screw you can add a nut to make sure it doesn't screw into the tripod mount too far and damage the camera.  You bend your knees slightly, drop the chain, stand on it, and straighten up to put tension on the chain.  This stabilizes the camera.  If you didn't want to use chain you could use a strong cord.
