Though many might argue, I have had great success with the 70-200/4 IS lens for indoor sports.

One of the toughest sports to shoot is hockey.  And youth hockey has notoriously poorly lit arenas to boot.  My 70-200/4 can and does handle this just fine.  I need to crank up the ISO a bit, but results are very satisfactory.  It's my only "L" lens and very well worth the price. If I had to thin out my lenses, it would be the very last lens to go.  It is everything that nearly everyone says about it.
