I used to shoot Olympus 4/3, but switched to Nikon because of the high ISO / low light performance, plus the fact that Oly seems to be abandoning their 4/3 users (may or may not be the case, but perception is everything).  I bought a D7000, and have been very happy with it for normal shooting, but have been struggling to find a long telephoto lens for it.

I have recently landed on the Sigma 150-500; while I am still playing with it, so far the results look promising.

I would suggest thinking about using it with your D700.  While you won't get quite the reach you got on Olympus 12MP @ 300mm, the quality should be quite a bit better.  The cost (new) is less than you would spend on a D7000 + 70-300, and the reach is better.  f/6.3 is only 1/3 stop slower than f/5.6, and both the 70-300 and 150-500 improve on the long end when stopped down to f/8 anyway.  With the D700 you will get (apparently; I have not compared with my D7000) better AF and high ISO shooting, plus a thinner DOF than you would get with either D7000 or 4/3 gear.

Just a thought...

Cheers
