Pop Photo on the A99: "We think it is going to change the landscape for mid-priced camera bodies."
Oct 24, 2012

The cover article in November's issue of Popular Photography is titled, on the cover: "The Future of Camera Tech?: Hands-On Report: Sony's New Alpha 99." It is entirely unusual for a "hands-on report," as opposed to a full review, to get cover treatment like this--especially when an important camera like the Canon 1DX is fully reviewed in the same issue.

The article, with its interior title of "Full Tilt: We try out the first dull-frame transmissive-mirror DSLR," demonstrates why Pop Photo is so impressed with the camera even ahead of full testing." The interior title itself, "Full Tilt," while in part a play on words referencing the fully-tilting LCD, injdicates that Pop Photo believes the camera embodies Sony's extremely focused, aggressive, full-throttle, full-blast, all-out assault on the FF market.

Their conclusion: "If the Sony A99 is able to wow us with its actual images under our standardized test conditions, we think it is going to change the landscape for mid-priced cameras. We can't wait to trade this early version for a full production sample to run through the Popular Photography Test Lab."

The full reviews of the A99 will soon be coming in. I believe that with every successive one this camera will grow in stature in the FF market.
