D40 lens replacement - One zoom lens? Or one fast prime and higher zoom combo?
Oct 24, 2012

Here's the scenario - I'm an amateur photographer is the best sense - getting off of 'Auto' and starting to use Aperture and Shutter modes....

I have the stock lens kit with the D40, the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6. I've already had it serviced once for not focusing, and it's still squeaking a little when it tries to focus, which is really slow.

So, I'm over the hype of believing I need a new camera body - I want one, but don't need one for what I'm using it for. Family pictures around the house, at the park, kids running around outside, etc...

Thus, my question. I'm looking to replace my stock lens with either a fast prime/zoom combo. Such as:  Nikon 35mm 1.8 and 55-200mm 4-5.6

Or: a nicer zoom lens that covers both ends of the spectrum: Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3

I'm no pro by any stretch of the imagination, so any advice from others who have been here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much!
