70-200mm F2.8 IS II/Non-IS - IQ?
Is the current 70-200mm F2.8 non-IS built on the same platform as the IS II version? My impression had been that it was the same lens design except for the omission of the IS functionality but when I looked at the test results at The Digital Picture there's a clear difference. Is it instead built on the prior-generation 70-200mm lens? Can anyone comment on real-world differences in image quality of these two lenses? The 100% crops at The Digital Picture show a significant difference to my eyes but is it noticeable on actual photos?
I'm considering these lenses for mainly sports photography and if I can save the considerable price difference between them without losing noticeable image quality I'd go for the non-IS version.
