Imagine: the MicroSix format
Oct 23, 2012

It is based on a square, 17.3 X 17.3 mm sensor with a 1.68 crop factor. It can use all the 4/3 and m4/3 lenses without significant loss of quality because it uses the same image circle as 4/3 (and m4/3).

Of course, equivalent focal lengths would change a bit, but consider the new ones:

7mm will be equivalent to ~12mm

12mm will be equivalent to ~21mm

14mm will be equivalent to ~24mm

17mm will be equivalent to ~28mm

20mm will be equivalent to ~33mm

25mm will be equivalent to ~42mm (close to the true normal FL)

45mm will be equivalent to ~75mm (unfortunately)

60mm will be equivalent to ~100mm

75mm will be equivalent to ~125mm

The square format means very easy composition (subject to varying taste) and no need to rotate the camera for portraits. A square LCD means lots of room for controls on the back of the cameras.

What do you think?
