This looks the worst when you have dark areas very close to the sun or a reflector shining directly into the camera (the sun through the leaves, a sunset such as yours). The sun with bright sky around is mostly not a problem.

Regarding those purple flares where the sun is not in the frame, shielding the lens with your hand may help. A lens hood would help in theory, but mind it'd take a petal-shaped zoom hood for such a lens - normal hoods are only cut for wide-angle with zoom lenses.
