Is it easy to turn on the IS in a lens?

I'd buy a "lens2scope" (or do a homebrew solution) if the IS in a Canon lens can be turned on and off with, basically, an on/off button and a battery to provide power at the contacts. Does anyone know if it works by a simple voltage change, or is it more complicated?
My guess is it isn't easy, or the designers of lens2scope would be doing it - but it seems worth checking.
Thanks.
