This is one area (product photographer is another) where post work can do you a lot of good. Not to downplay the importance of good lighting, but you just can't do it all with lights.

For fitness shots, Topaz Detail is a very useful plug-in, and not very expensive ($40). Imagenomic Portraiture is also good (considerably more expensive). You might also practice with dodging and burning to "sculpt" contours.

Thanks for the edit.  Did you use Topaz Detail for this?  I tried the trial version of the Topaz bundle but in my limited time using it, I wasn't able to do anything particularly special I couldn't do in Lightroom.  I probably needed to spend more time with it though.

Any particular tips with dodging and burning?  I did some minor LR3 brush adjustments with just -0.3 exposure to shadow areas and +0.1 to highlights.  I also have CS6 but I'm still learning to use it proficiently.
