So it beats a sub $1,000 camera with consumer lenses

I have a NEX-7.  It gives me better image quality than DSLRS like the Nikon 5100 or Canon Rebel 550D, both of which I have owned, and can, in the right conditions, compete with a "Full Frame" camera like the Canon 5D MkII (which I have owned) or the Nikon D600, which I am using alongside the NEX.

So it beats a sub $1,000 camera with consumer lenses, and can come close to $2,000 plus "prosumer" cameras with quality lenses.

It is a lot lighter and you have to get used to using the rear screen to compose or a fairly iffy electronic viewfinder.

Go and play with some models in a shop, or, if you can, borrow one for a ferw days from a friend.
