If you have a Firewire 800 Time Machine Drive, it will make your Migration Assistant MUCH faster than USB. So use Firewire 800 if you can! Also when you purchase your new machine, you should add RAM yourself and not buy it from Apple. I use MacSales.com. You will need at lease 8gig of Ram, and it is not hard to install yourself, and you save a lot of money. Get 16gig if you can.
My next advice is get the SSD option on your new iMac. It really speeds every thing up, and it should not fail like a hard drive. the SSD will not hold all of your files from the Time Machine backup, because it is not large enough. You should get a USB3 hard drive and hook it up externally for storage space. Migration Assistant should walk you through this, but I have not done it yet. If the SSD thing is out of the budget, then get the largest Internal Hard Drive that you can.
You will LOVE the new iMacs! Again, wait until the announcement from Apple tomorrow! I hope there are new iMacs!
