  • I owned the 120-300 for 3 years, it was a great lens but I sold it 2 years ago for Nikon 500 mm f/4 for birding (the primary use of my 120-300) . It was with my D200
  • I now have also the Nikon 70-200 VRII and it is a sharper lens at 200 mm  but it is about the same when used with 1.4x TC and not f/2.8 anymore.
  • The biggest difference is weight. The Sigma is not handholdable for a long period, I always used a monopod like I do for my 500mm. On the other hand, the 70-200 is very handholdable, even with 1.4xTC.
  • BTW, Sigma 1.4xTC works wonderfully well on this 120-300, but adds weight.
  • I now have a D800 and the ability to use high ISO makes me not missing f/2.8 for birding.
