Sorry to interrupt, but now you lost me:

Printing means additional transforming, e.g. RGB to CMYK, pushing digital values into inaccurate dots of ink/microtimings of lasers, and all in all introducing inaccuracies, variations and new artefacts never present in the original image captured.

Why is this better than scaling to a fixed resolution? Why is it not better to calculate the equivalent DPI for e.g. a 20" print, and combine it with users pixel-peeping ... or measure DR (and perhaps DR for each colour-channel ... when having decided if that is RGB, CMYK or something else) ?

It can hardly by the colour-qualities of the printer spitting out 200 000 front pages of a fashion magazine that determines the photographers choice of camera?

IMHO, PP- and DR-discussions would quickly exchange in favour of paper- and ink-quality discussions, rambling about inferior printing technologies, trying to prove the temperature was lower or humidity higher when testing the Sonikon than when proofing the Panasigmatic ... and meanwhile, the noble readers at DPR would have gotten nowhere --- or at least, I would

Tradition? Habits? Why is it "better" or more accurate?
