Black Rapid clones – looking for real world inputs

I was at the park with my kids over the weekend and saw a guy carry his 5D and 24-105 with a Black Rapid RS-7 strap. It looked great and his positive feedback made me want to go home and order one since I had been looking to replace the stock Canon strap that came with my 60D.
But I can't justify $60 for a strap. I understand it stands to protect $1500 of gear but are there alternatives that are cheaper?
I came across some of the clones of the BR models on amazon and ebay like the one linked below. Now I know these are called “clones” for a reason but I am curious to hear if anyone has actually used these and if so, what’s your opinion? http://www.amazon.com/Quick-Shoulder-Strap-Canon-Cameras/dp/B004MFQ2I8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Some folks have modded these for a few bucks to ensure the fastner stays secure. One example- http://www.flickr.com/photos/79082950@N04/7981088927/
It's 1/6th the cost!
