Nikon SB-600s Don't Work with 2700mAh Batteries?

I just got some Maha brand AA rechargeables that are rated 2700mAh.

They work really great with my Nikon SB-800 flash.

But when I put them in my SB-600s, those flashes won't power up. I tried with two different SB-600s -- no go. Yet when I put in the old 2300 rechargeables, the flashes powered up fine.

Are the SB-600s incompatible with the higher capacity batteries??
